Turmeric, ginger and lemon make a golden iced drink with an earthy finish. The pepper is optional for flavor. Hot steeping and a spoonful of fat do not establish a clinical absorption benefit for this cup. This uses culinary spices, not curcumin supplements.
Iced Turmeric Tea
Yield: 4 servings; 250 ml each before ice. Time: 10 minutes active; about 3 hours 30 minutes including steep/cooling.
- 4 US cups water (about 946 ml), plus water to restore final volume
- 2 teaspoons ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, optional for flavor
- 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
- 3 tablespoons lemon juice
- Ice; 4 lemon wheels, optional
Bring water to a boil, take off heat and whisk in turmeric, ginger and optional pepper. Cover and steep 10 minutes.
Strain through a fine sieve into a heat-safe measuring vessel; powder may remain. Stir in sweetener and lemon. Measure the finished liquid: if above 1 litre, reserve the extra separately; if below, add potable water to make exactly 1 litre for this batch.
Divide between shallow heat-safe containers, cool promptly in an ice-water bath and refrigerate until 40 F (4 C) or below. Allow at least 3 hours refrigerator chilling, longer if needed.
Stir before each pour and divide into 4 equal 250 ml portions. Serve over ice immediately; refrigerate unused tea and use within 24 hours.

Turmeric tea variations
Yield: tea 4 x 250 ml; creamy about 280 ml; fizz 240 ml; double 8 x 250 ml. Time: same cooling; 5 minutes assembly.
- 2 tablespoons grated culinary fresh turmeric in place of 2 tsp ground
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon OR 1 lightly cracked cardamom pod for entire batch
- 2 tablespoons canned coconut milk per 250 ml serving
- 160 ml chilled tea plus 80 ml sparkling water per glass
Use fresh turmeric or one measured spice addition in the same 10 minute hot steep, straining before chilling. The forms differ in flavor and sediment; they are not therapeutic equivalents.
For a creamy version, stir 2 tablespoons coconut milk into one chilled 250 ml tea portion; serve immediately. Use no coconut oil, which can solidify when chilled.
For turmeric soda, combine 160 ml prepared sweetened tea and 80 ml soda over ice; do not add undefined extra honey or lemon. For a double batch, multiply ingredients by 2 and measure 2 litres finished tea, reserving excess or adding water as needed, before chilling in shallow containers.
Handling and flavor
Turmeric powder is suspended rather than dissolved; some sediment remains after a fine sieve. Stir before pouring. Ground and fresh root produce different strengths. Turmeric stains, so wipe spills promptly. Refrigerate in a covered clean container at 40 F (4 C) or below and use within 24 hours, a conservative house handling limit. Keep ice and sparkling mixers separate until service. Discard perishable drinks left out more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90 F (32 C). Wash hands and rinse fresh produce under running water before cutting; scrub melon and cucumber skins. Use clean utensils and potable water. Honey drinks are unsuitable for infants under 12 months. Fresh blended or squeezed juice is untreated; use pasteurized juice options for guests at greater risk of foodborne illness.
