The basic formula follows Cleveland Clinic’s Sleepy Girl Mocktail explanation: tart cherry juice, magnesium powder and a fizzy mixer. Cleveland Clinic says mixer ratios vary. The magnesium measure below is deliberately product-specific because powder concentrations differ.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup pure tart cherry juice
  • Optional: one serving of magnesium powder as measured on your product label, if appropriate for you
  • A splash of sparkling water or prebiotic soda, to taste
  • Ice

Method

  1. Stir the cherry juice and optional measured magnesium until the powder dissolves.
  2. Add ice and a splash of fizzy mixer. Serve immediately.

Magnesium and sleep

A universal tablespoon or teaspoon is not reliable for magnesium supplements. Read the elemental magnesium amount on your label. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements sets an adult upper limit of 350 mg a day from supplements and medications unless a clinician recommends otherwise. Check with a clinician if you have kidney disease or take interacting medication. Cleveland Clinic describes the sleep evidence as limited and says this drink is not an insomnia cure.
